Participation in Research Projects

In my long creative engineering activity I have taken part in mathematical modeling and design of the following large and important hydraulic structures:
- Technical water supply of Nuclear Power Plant “Kozloduy”;
- Hydraulic calculations of the hydraulic transients in the Pumped Storage Power Plant
- “Chaira”;
- Calculations and investigations of the mutual hydraulic and energetic influences of the Water Power Plants in the lower Danube – “Iron Gate I”, “Iron Gate II” and “Nikopol - Turnu.- Magurele;
- Calculation of dam-break waves due to failure of a cascade of water power plants in the lower Danube;
- Mathematical modeling of unsteady plows in a cascade of irrigation canals with automatic regulation of Rousse irrigation system;
More than 30 applied programs have been developed and used for carrying out of different scientific and diploma projects .Active participation in more than 20 significant
investigations concerning hydraulic modeling and design of important hydraulic structures in Bulgaria and abroad.

Publications

Published more than 50 scientific articles in Bulgarian and foreign magazines. The publications during the period 1965 to 1975 were among the first in Bulgaria in which my own computer programs were applied for solving hydraulic problems. The topics in these publications are:
- Hydraulics of the free surface flow;
- Hydraulics of the water supply and sewerage networks;
- Unsteady flows - numerical modeling;
- Shock waves - computational models;
- Hydraulic transients in cascade of irrigation canals;
- Unsteady flows and emergency situations in channels for technical water supply of
Nuclear Power Plants.
During the same period I have published three reports for the IAHR congresses (International Association for Hydraulics Research). Most of the recent publications are in the fields of closed conduits flows, free surface gradually varied flows and shock waves. The topics are:
- Oscillations in the system “Tunnel - surge tank” in water power systems;
- Calculation of dam-break waves in mountain rivers;

- Application of the finite element method for calculations of groundwater flows and for
modeling of pollutant spread in free surface flows;
- Calculation of dam-break waves in sequential built dams in lower part of large lowland
rivers;
- Application of boundary element method for calculation of seepage under dam
foundation;
- Modeling of unsteady flows in reservoirs of sequential built dams in large lowland rivers.
- Calculation of the catastrophic dam-break waves of the dams: “Iskar”, “Beli Iskar”, “Chernogorovo”, Chaira”, “Iadenitca”, “Krichim” etc.
My textbook of “Numerical Modeling in Hydraulics” has been published in 1986.
The textbook of “Hydraulics”, edited by Prof. Em. Marinov, has been published in 1994 and 2003.
As Deputy Minister I was the leading expert in working out of the new Bulgarian Water low . It lays the foundations of the contemporary institutional structure and of the contemporary Water Resources Management in Bulgaria, coordinated with the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive.
As President of the ICPDR I am one of the authors of the Report of the International Task Force for Assessing the Baia Mare Accident . This accident occurred at Baia Mare and Baia Borsa –Romania and caused a large scale pollution in the middle and lower stretch of the Danube river.
