An Introduction to Fracture Mechanics

An Introduction to Fracture Mechanics

In this course the problems of fracture mechanics (FM) is considered within the framework of the linear and nonlinear fracture mechanics. Important parameters relevant to LEFM, such as Stress Intensity Factors and Fracture Energy Release Rate are defined and methods for their evaluation are studied. Smeared crack approach of the fracture mechanics is considered in the second part of the course along with consideration of a real material such as the concrete. The nonlinear theory is presented due to crack initiation and development in the tensile zone of the reinforced concrete beams and joints. A number of examples are solved using finite element method based software programs.
