Numerical Methods in Geotechnical Design

Numerical Methods in Geotechnical Design
Major Geotechnical Engineering
Faculty Faculty of Transportation Engineering
Department Geotechnics
Lead Lecturer Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eng. Lena Mihova

This subject acquaints students with the opportunities and application specificities of some numerical methods in geotechnical design: finite element method (FEM), finite difference method (FDM), boundary element method (BEM), and others. The following topics are covered: The essence and application of classical and contemporary constitutive models in Geomechanics; Numerical models for investigation of the bearing capacity and stability of earth bed; Opportunities for modeling of stress and strain state of earthen structures in building and operational periods; Soil consolidation models; Numerical models of the system “superstructure – foundation structure – earth bed” in case of static and dynamic loading; Simulation of the interface between supporting structures and soil massif; Инженерна скална механика.
