Sofia is in the top 3 most desirable Erasmus destinations, our capital hosts the General Assembly of the network

09.05.2024

More than 1600 international students from all over Europe, the European Commission, EAIE, the Association for Academic Cooperation, the European Youth Forum and Young European Federalists have named Sofia one of the best cities for Erasmus mobility.

Our capital ranks third after Porto and Nicosia. More than 30 cities included in the network of the international student organisation Erasmus Student Network took part in the competition for the best destination city. The prize was awarded during the biggest conference of Erasmus students - Erasmus Generation Meeting in Seville, Spain.

The choice of the capital was due to several key factors. The accessibility to accommodation, quality education, cultural richness and welcoming atmosphere of Sofia provided a more enriching experience for the students during their stay. Our country's strategic location also predisposes for better connectivity with other Eastern European countries, making it an ideal choice for those looking for a good mix of history, rich culture and more.

"This success is the result of the hard work of many Bulgarian students and volunteers in Sofia, who want to attract more international students for mobility in the capital," said ESN - Sofia, the local office of the organization. "The joint work between the capital's universities and students helped our team to present the beauty of our city and show how attractive Sofia can be," they add.

As a result of the prestigious ranking, Sofia will host the General Assembly of the largest student organisation in Europe - Erasmus Student Network. It brings together all students studying under the European Commission's Erasmus programme. The event will take place from 9 to 12 May at New Bulgarian University. It is expected that representatives of the community from 45 countries where the programme takes place will arrive in Bulgaria to elect the new members of the International Board of the Erasmus Student Network, which is based in Brussels. Future plans of the network to improve access to equal and quality education within the European Union will also be discussed. The opening of the event will be attended by the Rector of St. Kliment Ohridski" Prof. Dr. Georgi Valchev, the Rector of the NBU Prof. Dr. Mr.. Prof. Plamen Doynov, representatives of the Centre for Human Resource Development and various national institutions.

Erasmus Student Network Bulgaria is part of a global student volunteer organisation that aims to support the integration of students studying abroad under the European Commission's Erasmus programme.
